The retina is the layer located furthest at the back of the eye and consists of a layer of nerve tissue onto which external images are focused. The retina then converts these images into electric signals which it sends to the brain via the optic nerve.

The vitreous humour is a gelatinous and transparent substance that fills the space between the surface of the retina and the eye’s crystalline lens.

By examining the fundus of the eye, the ophthalmologist is able to view the retina via the pupil with an ophthalmoscopy.
