Lesions and Tumors on the Eyelids

The eyelids and skin around the eyes can suffer from various lesions, the vast majority of which are benign such as sties, chalazions and sebaceous cysts. Nevertheless, malign lesions can also appear. The most common malign skin tumour is basal cell carcinoma. Symptoms that we should look out for are: rapid growth of the lesion, ulceration, jagged edges, asymmetric shape, change in colouring and deterioration in the shape of the eyelid.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should urgently see an ophthalmologist specialised in oculoplastics since an early diagnosis and treatment are fundamental to removing the lesion. Once the basal cell carcinoma has been operated on and removed, the cancer is considered to have been completely cured and there is no need for any further treatment.

As well as surgically removing the tumour, the oculoplastic surgeon will also restructure the eyelid to give it the best possible appearance.
