Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is the principal cosmetic technique for the eyelids and consists of removing the fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. For the upper eyelid the procedure is carried out externally by making an incision in a crease or cutaneous ridge that is on the upper eyelid meaning that no scarring is visible. For the lower eyelid the fat is generally removed internally (through the conjunctiva) with no need to make any incision in the skin.

The operation requires only a local anaesthetic in the eyelids and for the patient to be lightly sedated. This means the patient will be awake but relaxed and feel no pain. Patients do not need to stay overnight in hospital and only need to spend two to three hours at the clinic. After an initial postoperative check, patients can leave by themselves.

The upper and lower eyelids can be operated on separately or at the same time. Blepharoplasty can also be combined with other surgical procedures for reshaping the face such as lifting eyebrows or lateral canthopexy (to reinforce the lower eyelids and elevate the lateral angle). Blepharoplasty does not, however, remove wrinkles or so-called “laughter lines” but these can be removed using other procedures such as botulinum toxin injections (Botox).

Blepharoplasty must always be adapted to each individual. At Clínica Castilla we know that every patient has their own needs and, as such, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of therapies and meeting the high expectations of our patients.

What is recovery like after surgery?

Normally we recommend patients rest for 2 to 3 days after which time they should be able to resume everyday tasks and even return to work. Bruising of the area that has been treated doesn’t tend to last more than 7 to 14 days.

Who can undergo the operation?

Anyone with an excess of skin and/or fat in the eyelids who wants to improve their aesthetic appearance. In the case of men, special care is taken to ensure that the patient’s masculine features are preserved following the operation.
